Kenny Gourlay – Chartered Physiotherapist and First Contact Practitioner
I am a highly skilled and experienced Chartered Physiotherapist, fully registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). With a passion for patient care and a dedication to, both medical musculoskeletal (MSK) rehab and sports injury rehab. I have built a distinguished career working with patients from various areas of health care, and also worked with athletes, including those at the National and Olympic levels. Throughout my career, I have exemplified a dedication to continuous learning and a commitment to the advancement of physiotherapy practices. My extensive training and experience make me a leading expert in this field, capable of delivering high-quality care that is both scientifically grounded and patient-centred.
By blending many techniques of treatment and physiotherapy practices such as manual therapy, exercise and rehabilitation, I ensure a holistic approach to recovery and the enhancement of patients’ quality of life. Most recently, I have completed a Stage 2 First Contact Practitioner (FCP) Postgraduate Certificate (March 2024) at the Health Sciences University in Bournemouth. Following this, I have advanced my expertise by completing an MSK joint injection course at Plymouth University. These additional qualifications have established me as an advanced clinician within the NHS, where I am the first point of contact for patients presenting with MSK issues at GP surgeries. This role involves managing a diverse caseload, ranging from routine to complex cases, demonstrating my comprehensive understanding and capability in advanced physiotherapy.
I began my academic journey at Manchester Metropolitan University, where I graduated in 2007 with an Honours Degree in Sports Science. Driven by a commitment to furthering my expertise, I pursued a Master’s degree in Physiotherapy, which I successfully completed in January 2015 at Southampton University.
This solid foundation in sports science was complemented by the acquisition of a Football Association (FA) diploma in sports injury and a Sports Massage diploma. In addition to academic qualifications, I am a certified Football Association Medical Tutor. In this role, I have imparted critical knowledge in pitch-side first aid and sports injury management to aspiring professionals, contributing to the safety and well-being of athletes at all levels of competition.
In 2012, I expanded my skill set by earning the HSE First Aid Instructor’s Award and completing a teaching certificate. These qualifications have enabled ne to not only treat but also educate others on vital medical and first aid practices. Demonstrating a commitment to integrative treatment approaches, I am also a registered member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). Through this membership, I have specialised in combining Traditional Chinese Medicine principles with contemporary physiotherapy techniques. This integrated approach, which includes the use of acupuncture, has proven effective in treating a range of conditions, reducing pain, and promoting healing.
